Online scammers seek to profit from the death of Steve Jobs

BOSTON (Reuters) - Online scammers are already attempting to capitalize on the death of Steve Jobs with a bogus offer to Facebook users for free iPads in his memory.

Computer anti-virus firm Sophos said that the scammers urged Facebook users to click on a link to register for free Apple Inc products, then requested they complete online surveys or enter gambling sites. The scammers profit when users click through those links because they get commissions based on the amount of traffic they bring to the websites, said Graham Cluley, a researcher with Sophos.

While this particular scam did not involve any computer viruses, online criminals could be planning more malicious campaigns focused on the death of Jobs.

"They could just as easily have taken those users to a webpage containing malicious code or a phishing page designed to steal credentials," Cluley said on the Sophos blog.

The scam, while tasteless, wasn't all that original. Computer fraudsters frequently attract prey by linking news of the latest tragedy or celebrity gossip to offers for free products, then packaging them in tainted Facebook messages, Tweets or emails.

IITs & IISc fail to woo aspirants for online CAT : (Slow down Effects CAT Application)

The addition of the IITs and the Indian Institute of Science to the list of institutes accepting CAT score has failed to create an impact on the total number of applicants registered for the online test this year.

Registration for CAT 2011 stands at 2.05 lakh candidates, which is just 1,000 applicants more than last year’s figure. The registration process was closed on Tuesday night.

Though the number of CAT aspirants has witnessed a steady decline since 2009, it was expected to pick up this year. In anticipation, the organisers had also added three new test centres in Bhilai, Dehradun and Jammu.

But a marginal, almost insignificant, increase in registered candidates has come even when reputed B-Schools such as the Faculty of Management Studies of Delhi University, MICA, Ahmedabad, along with IISc and six of the best IITs joined the CAT camp this year.

The main reason for the decline in the registration, according to CAT convener Professor Jankiraman Moorthy, remains the same as the last few years — the economic slowdown.

“Youngsters would work for a few years and then quit to pursue an MBA degree.

With the job market taking a hit in 2009, the number of aspirants decreased. Things are not looking so great for the economy once again,” Moorthy said. “More importantly, two lakh candidates is still a large number as we (the 13 IIMs) absorb just 3,000 out of them. That’s just 0.5 per cent of the total.” CAT 2011 will be conducted over 20 days this year between October 22 and November 18.

Don’t vote for Congress: Hazare appeals to Hisar voters

New Delhi: In a fresh appeal, social activist Anna Hazare Friday urged people in Hisar in Haryana not to vote for the Congress in the Oct 13 Lok Sabha by-election, alleging that the party is not committed to passing the civil society’s Jan Lokpal Bill.

“I appeal to the people of Hisar not to vote for the Congress party and their candidate should be defeated as the party is not committed to passing the Jan Lokpal Bill,” Anna Hazare said in a video message posted on You Tube.The 74-year-old activist said he had some time back written to all the political parties seeking their support on the Jan Lokpal Bill.

“Most of the parties, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), replied to me affirming their support but I have not received any communication from the Congress,” he said.

Hazare said he would call off his anti-Congress campaign if the party commits to passing the Jan Lokpal Bill in the winter session of parliament.

“If Congress is committed to passing the Jan Lokpal bill, then we would not hold any agitation. Instead, we would appeal to the people to check the antecedents of the candidates and vote for the good ones,” he added.

The 10-minute video shows footage of Hazare’s movements in the capital.

The video was released to the media by India Against Corruption, an NGO that has been spearheading the movement. The NGO said its convener Arvind Kejriwal will campaign in Hisar in support of the Jan Lokpal Bill till Oct 10.

“Defeat the Congress party in this election and this will send a message that if the Jan Lokpal Bill is not passed in the winter session, the party would be defeated in all other elections,” said Kejriwal.

On Tuesday, he had announced in Ralegan Siddhi that he would launch his campaign in Hisar for passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill.
